High-Pressure System

An area where atmospheric pressure is higher than its surroundings, usually bringing settled, drier weather.

Air sinks and spreads outward within a high-pressure system, which suppresses cloud formation and typically brings calmer, clearer skies than a low-pressure system. In summer this often means warm, sunny weather, while in winter a persistent high can trap cold air near the ground, sometimes leading to fog or frost that lingers for days.
