explained
What do the pollen levels in Oslo mean?
Pollen concentration in the air is measured in pollen grains per cubic metre of air (grains/m³). The higher that number, the greater the chance of hay fever symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes or sneezing. We translate the concentration in Oslo into four levels: low, moderate, high and very high, per pollen type.
Which pollens matter when?
Alder and hazel are usually the first pollens of the year, active from January to March. Birch pollen follows from March to May and causes the most severe symptoms for many hay fever sufferers. Grasses dominate from May into August and are the leading cause of hay fever across most of Europe. Mugwort and ragweed are active from July into September, typically at lower but still noticeable concentrations.
What can you do about high pollen concentrations in Oslo?
Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible on high-concentration days, especially around midday and early evening when pollen is often most widespread. Wash your hands and face after being outside, and consider wearing sunglasses on high-concentration days to keep pollen out of your eyes. For persistent symptoms an antihistamine can bring relief; consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
