Weather models are built on current measurements: temperature, air pressure, humidity and wind, gathered from weather stations, balloons, ships and satellites around the world. For today and the next couple of days, models can track how the atmosphere is actually behaving in fine detail, which is why short-range forecasts are usually close to what actually happens. The atmosphere is still fairly predictable over that short a window, so small measurement gaps rarely throw the forecast far off course. Major forecasting centres run their global models several times a day, each run digesting the latest batch of observations from weather stations, balloons, ships, aircraft and satellites, so the short-range picture is essentially rebuilt from fresh data every few hours rather than once a day. That density of current information is exactly what's missing further into the future, which is the core reason accuracy tapers off the further out you look rather than staying constant.

Why does the forecast keep changing?

New data arrives constantly — every few hours, fresh readings come in from around the globe. Each time a model ingests that data, it recalculates everything downstream, including the forecast for next week. That's why a forecast for next Tuesday can look different this morning than it did yesterday: it isn't that the earlier forecast was wrong exactly, it's that better information became available in the meantime. This is completely normal, and it happens more the further out in time you look, since small uncertainties early in the model run compound over the following days. Meteorologists call each of these refreshed calculations a 'model run', and it's completely normal to see the forecast nudge a degree or two, or shift a rain shower by an hour, between one run and the next. Larger jumps are rarer but can happen when a weather system's exact track is still genuinely uncertain, for instance when two plausible paths for an approaching front are roughly equally likely. As the event gets closer, new data usually narrows that down to one clearer outcome, which is why forecasts firm up rather than staying vague right until the day itself.

Further out, it's a trend, not a precise number

Once you get past about a week, a forecast stops being a precise prediction and starts being an indication of a pattern: a milder spell, a wetter stretch, a chance of a cold snap. A forecast showing 22°C ten days from now doesn't mean the temperature will hit exactly 22°C that day — it means the model currently expects a warmer-than-average period around then. Treat numbers that far out as a rough range rather than a fact, and expect them to sharpen up as the date gets closer. This is also part of why two different weather apps can show slightly different numbers for the same day ten days out: they may be built on different underlying models, update on different schedules, or blend several models together in different ways. Neither app is necessarily wrong; both are estimates drawn from the same underlying uncertainty, just processed slightly differently. Some forecasting services even run the same model dozens of times with tiny variations in the starting conditions, called an ensemble, specifically to show how much the outcome can diverge that far ahead.

How to actually use a 14-day forecast

Use the first few days to make concrete plans — what to wear, whether to bring an umbrella, whether it's a good day for something outdoors. Use the days beyond that mainly to spot the bigger picture: is a warm spell or a wet stretch coming, so you can plan around it loosely. Then check back again as the date approaches. The forecast for a week-out day will keep refining itself daily, and by the time it's two or three days away, it should be about as reliable as any short-range forecast. It's also worth checking the forecast more than once rather than just once and forgetting about it, especially in the day or two before you actually need it. If the outlook for a planned trip has stayed roughly consistent across several checks, that stability is itself a good sign the forecast has settled; if it keeps shifting noticeably, treat your plans as more flexible and keep a backup in mind, particularly for anything genuinely weather-dependent, like an outdoor event or a long hike.
