Seeing '40% chance of rain' in a forecast is easy to misread. It doesn't describe how much of the day will be wet — it describes how likely rain is to happen at all.

What the percentage actually means

A rain probability is the model's confidence that measurable rain will fall at a given location within a given time window, not the share of the day that will be wet, nor how heavy the rain will be. A 40% chance for the afternoon means that, in similar past atmospheric setups, rain occurred roughly 40% of the time — it says nothing about whether that rain, if it comes, lasts five minutes or five hours. This figure is often called the 'probability of precipitation', or PoP for short, in official forecast documentation. A forecaster might be very confident that a large rain band will cross the whole region, giving a high percentage, or only moderately confident that a scattered shower might form somewhere nearby, giving a lower one — both situations can result in rain at your exact spot, just with different levels of certainty going in.

Why rain forecasts vary so much by area

Showers, especially in summer, can be highly localized: one neighbourhood gets a downpour while a few kilometres away stays completely dry. A forecast for a wide region can therefore feel wrong for your exact spot even when it was accurate for the area as a whole. Checking the forecast for your specific location, and the short-range radar where available, gives a much better picture than a broad regional summary. Weather radar, where available, can track individual showers in close to real time, which is far more precise than a forecast issued hours or a day in advance for a wide area. If you're deciding whether to head out in the next hour or two, a quick look at the radar can often tell you more than the percentage figure alone.

Plan outdoor time with a margin

For anything outdoors, don't just pick the hour with the lowest rain chance — factor in how long the activity will last too. A shower can arrive earlier or later than a model expects, so for a longer walk, ride or event, it's worth having a backup plan or a shorter route in mind if the sky starts to look unsettled. If you're planning a two-hour walk, for example, picking the single hour with the lowest percentage isn't quite enough — check that the hours around it also look reasonably dry, since a shower drifting in slightly early or late can still catch you partway through. For anything longer, like a full day outdoors, treat the forecast as a guide to the likely pattern of the day rather than a guarantee for any particular hour within it.

Probability tells you nothing about amount

A high probability doesn't necessarily mean heavy rain, and a low one doesn't rule out a brief, intense downpour — they're two different pieces of information. Always pair the rain percentage with the forecast icon and expected rainfall amount, and check the hour-by-hour breakdown rather than relying on the percentage figure alone. Many forecasts pair the percentage with an expected rainfall total in millimetres, and that number is worth reading alongside the percentage rather than instead of it. A forecast showing a high chance of rain but only a very small expected amount usually points to a light, brief shower rather than a soaking downpour, while a lower percentage paired with a larger amount can mean an isolated but genuinely heavy burst if it does happen to hit your location.
